ORANGE BELT

RANK

At beginner orange belt, students should have a basic understanding of beginning techniques.  Orange represents the knowledge that begins to emerge like the budding of a young plant in spring.   Remember the color of the young bean sprout in those science experiments in school? The sprout was orange in color, and very delicate. This is also true of karate students. If the student makes it through this transitional period, he will reach green belt and continue to further this growth. Or, like the sprout, his enthusiasm will wither and die, and he will quit training.

GREEN BELT

RANK

Green belt is the most critical period for the karate student, because if the roots and foundation have not been secured, the student will not produce the needed fruits to continue the growing process. A green belt student is both dangerous to himself and others.  He has just enough knowledge to get into trouble and this becomes the cross roads of success.

RED BELT

Beginner Red represents blood, life, energy, attention, and control.  The students power and techniques begin to bloom and ripen, as they begin to mature as martial artists.    The student must also begin to focus less on himself/herself and more on helping others. This starts at green belt and continues through the red belt level. The red belt student is the hardest worker in the training hall and cannot seem to absorb enough knowledge. Whatever knowledge he/she gains, he/she gladly shares with the lower-ranking students accordingly.  Now the Red Belt begins the preparation of mind and body for the final step needed to attain the rank of chodan.

2nd DAN
BLACK BELT

KYO SA NIM

At 2nd Dan, the student begins to realize that they are really a Black Belt with abilities far greater than the average person.  They're finally understanding how techniques really work and how to manipulate them in different situations.  Vital targets and areas of the body become more visible and useful.  This is the stage of realization as one begins to move toward Mastery of the Art as well as of self.

3rd DAN
BLACK BELT

3rd Dan is comparable to reaching Junior level in High School and College.  The student's techniques have advanced so that now 1st and 2nd Dans have a new found respect for them all while realizing they still have much more to achieve.  Speed, precision, power, breathing, calm, energy, are all mechanisms that a 3rd Dan is learning and able to control at will and at any instance.  A student becomes more compassionate for others at this level because they realize the harm they can inflict on another person.  Their personal arsenal hands, feet, fingers, elbows, knees, head, forearm, shin, etc. are now all destructive weapons and with more power comes more responsibility and care.

4th DAN
BLACK BELT

MASTER

4th Dan is the Mastery level of all belts before and most importantly of self.  With the addition of much higher level forms and techniques,  a Master has acquired the discipline, self control, and respect for self and others to handle any situation before him with tact, honor, and dignity.  With so much power and ability, a Master's level of responsibility must be at a level as great as or greater than his\her humility, modesty, and tolerance.   A Master has and continues to pass on his\her knowledge and guide those who are on the path of mastering their Art and Self.

The Philosophy of the Midnight Blue Belt

Many traditional Tang Soo Do/Soo Bahk Do schools use a dark midnight blue colored belt for dan ranks, rather than the more common black belt.  There are several reasons for this.  Historically, it is thought that the Hwa Rang Dan warriors of ancient Korean wore a very similar outfit to the uniform that we wear today, which was trimmed in a dark blue.  We wear midnight blue to reflect the traditional Korean heritage of our art.  Philosophically, black is the darkest color possible, symbolizing death or an ending.  Midnight blue symbolizes the knowledge which has been absorbed, but it is not so dark that it cannot absorb more color (knowledge).  Thus, the midnight blue belt is seen only as a new beginning, where a student may continue to learn and refine their technique, and begin to gain greater insight into their art.  The solid midnight blue belt is worn for 1st thru 3rd dans, with white or gold stripes on the left end of the belt to indicate rank.  For 4th dan (master level) and above, a midnight blue belt with a red stripe all the way through the center is worn.
